Weir High bowling team etches name in record books

The Weir High bowling team etched its name into the record books, as it was the first West Virginia squad to compete during the U.S. High School Bowling National Championships from Saturday until Monday.

The Red Riders concluded their run after falling in the first round of the boys singles championship round on Monday. David Bloomer finished 72nd overall, Thomas Babinchak 74th and Evan Baldauf 77th.

The Weir High boys finished Sunday in the Elite 8 and are the seventh best team in the nation. Prior to that, they moved to the round of 16 as the 10th overall squad. Babinchak paced the Red Riders with a 654 series.

The Weir High girls finished Saturday with a 2,089 series but did not qualify for the next round. Savannah Moore had the high game of 180 with a 428 high series.

“We couldn’t be more proud of our teams. Weir Red Rider Bowling made its mark on the national stage,” assistant coach Robert Babinchak said.
