RIDLEY TOWNSHIP: After being shutout last week by Springfield, Marple-Newtown Head Coach Chris Gicking knew his team was in for another heavyweight battle this Friday night on the road at Ridley, so he issued a challenge to his team and Sophomore Brett Wolski and the Tigers defense accepted the challenge and came out to play shutting down the Green Raiders 28-0 at Phil Marion Field.

“Central League is a heavyweight fight every week no matter who you are playing.” Gicking said adding that “We knew we were coming in for a heavyweight with Ridley, there a really good team. We were upset with ourselves after last week, we felt we didn’t play our best last week, so we went back and said we had to focus, and we challenged them.”

“All week at practice the coaches were on us, and we knew we had to bounce back and we did.” Wolski who rushed for 130 yards while adding two interceptions on the defensive side.

It was Wolski’s first interception of Ridley’s Ryan Carroll that set up the game’s first score with the Tigers going 34 yards on seven plays behind the running of Brian Box but it was Wolski with a 3-yard touchdown that put the Tigers up 7-0.

The Tigers went on to extend their lead on their next possession going 61 yards on 13 plays before Box powered his way into the endzone from five yards out putting the Tigers up 14-0 with under a minute left in the first half. On the ensuing Green Raider drive Bobby Knapp intercepted Carroll and returned it 42 yards on the last play of the half to give the Tigers the 21-0 lead entering the locker room at halftime.

On their opening drive of the second half the Green Raiders showed some life with a 52-yard run by Alante Smith put the Green Raiders down to the Tigers 5-yard line unfortunately for the Greens a bad center resulted in a loss of 24 yards which led to them turning the ball over on downs.

Following Wolski’s second interception of the game the Tigers put the final nail in the Green Raiders with a 27-yard touchdown pass from David Bertoline to Paul DeFruscio making it 28-0.

Next week the Tigers (4-1) get a break from their Central League schedule when they host Mastery Charter North from the Philadelphia Public League while the Green Raiders (1-3) will look to get back in the win column when they host Conestoga.
