Winter Park, Freedom set Friday region volleyball showdown

The Winter Park boys volleyball team remained undefeated and inched closer to its ultimate goal Tuesday, sweeping host Apopka in an FHSAA region semifinal by scores of 25-19, 25-11, 25-11.

The Wildcats (26-0) withstood a feisty effort from the Blue Darters (13-2) in the first set and were dominant thereafter.

“We saw (Apopka) early on in the regular season, so we had a good idea of what their potential could be,” Winter Park head coach Jesse Day said. “We knew we’d get the best of them and we knew at home they’d bring everything they had.”

Winter Park, ranked No. 1 in the state by MaxPreps, will play at third-ranked Freedom (26-2) in Friday night’s region final. Freedom, which owes both of its losses to Winter Park, won a five-set thriller on Tuesday.
