Saturday afternoon, I made another drive to South Charleston High School, located in South Charleston, WV, so that I could cover one of the most intense All-Star games I cover each year, and that is the West Virginia North vs. South game. I have to give props to all of the players who elected to play in this game and for the clean, hard-hitting game they provided the fans with today.

The first big play in this one came at 10:36, with the South blocking the North’s punt. It appeared that Jordan Harvey (Independence) got the ball, but the PA guy said it was Jerimiah Jackson (Oak Hill). Nevertheless, the South would start their drive on the North’s 11 yard line. That drive ended with a 23-yard field goal from Ethan Vargo-Thomas (Oak Hill), giving the South team a 3-0 lead with 9:12 left in the opening quarter.

The North would get a 63-yard touchdown pass to Jameer Hunter (Martinsburg) on a double handoff before the pass was thrown. Dawson Price (East Hardy) made this a 7-3 game with his point-after-kick at the 9:12 mark.

With 6:09 left in the quarter, Carson Shriver (Clay-Battelle) was hit for a 2-yard loss by Klayton Matthews (George Washington). One of the All-Star rules in this game was no blitzing and that rule was broken by Brodee Rice (Princeton) busted into the backfield plowing down Skyler Delk (Roane County). The refs called the penalty, with the result being a do-over. Delk would put the ball on the ground but make the recovery. getting credit for the South tackle was Andrew Rollyson.

The second quarter would see Gage Hawkins (Wier) take down 6-1, 225-pound Caden Beam (Winfield) for a short loss. Hawkins goes 190. The next big defensive play came when Noah Burnside (South Harrison) broke into the South backfield and sacked Grant Cochran (Princeton) for a 9 yard loss. The North defense was awarded a safety when a snap to the punter went out of the end zone to give the North a 9-3 lead with 1:09 left in the half.

The South would get a nice defensive play from Jackson when he got to Phillips for a 4 yard loss with 0:15 left in the half. Jackson shrugged off the sack and found Will James (Wheeling Park) for a 50-yard touchdown as time expired in the first half, giving us a 16-3 score.

The third quarter would bring a 29-yard touchdown pass from Cochran to Rice, bringing this to a 16-10 game with 2:49 showing on the clock. Each team would record one big play before the quarter ended. The North would get a 26 yard pass to Hunter thrown by Phillips, and the South got a big 16 yard power run from Matt Moore (Woodrow Wilson) Moore is a big ball carrier, checking in at 6-0, 240 pounds.

Brady Green (Van), who I voted for on my media ballot for the most valuable player on the South, would throw a halfback pass to Jaxon Cougar (Logan) for 13 yards at the 9:20 mark of the final frame. The North would recover nicely from the pass completion when Dashawn Webster (Phillip Barbour) stopped Rice on fourth and two, giving the ball back to the North offense with 6:52 left. The biggest play from the line of scrimmage came from the North offense with 6:30 left, with Skyler Delk (Roan County) breaking loose for a 92-yard run, setting up the offense with a first and goal from inside the one. The final touchdown came 18 seconds later, when Bayden Hartman plowed in from a yard out. Price concluded the scoring with his point after the kick, making the final score 23-10. Two final plays of note would take place, with each team posting one. For the South, Cochran connected with Thomas for a 32-yard gain, and then the North added another sack to its total when Burnside and Harley Sickles (North Marion) got to Cochran on a fourth-and-long play.
