Menlo School relay sets a new mark

The Menlo School boys 4×1,600 relay team broke a 44-year Central Coast Section record, placing second at Mt. SAC Relays with a time of 17 minutes, 19.22 seconds.

Torrey Pines finished first in 17:10.10.

Menlo senior Justin Pretre, sophomore Landon Pretre, senior Aiden Deffner and sophomore Will Hauser broke the CCS record event that Leigh held since 1979. The Longhorns’ time was 17:24.84.

Landon Petre ran his leg in 4:17.0, Deffner in 4:27.8, Hauser in 4:21.0 and Justin Petre in 4:13.4.

“It is a really good sign as we approach the postseason,” Justin Pretre said in a statement provided by the school. “We’re going to keep pushing for the next few weeks and then it’s all about competing and maintaining until the end of the year.”

North Coast Section sets guidelines for new sport

The NCS Board of Managers voted Friday to set Aug. 7 and Nov. 4 as the start and end dates for the inaugural girls flag football season.

“Very excited to see this get started,” commissioner Pat Cruickshank told the Bay Area News Group in a text message Monday morning.

Cruikshank said around 40 schools seemed ready to participate when polled during a section Sports Advisory Committee meeting in March, but added, “That could change as we get closer and more show interest.”

The board also voted to establish 28 as the maximum number of games that can be played during the season.

Flag football became a CIF-sanctioned sport in February.

Mitty vs. St. Francis: Top teams meet Wednesday

St. Francis and Archbishop Mitty, the Central Coast Section’s top teams, play each other for the first time on Wednesday in a West Catholic Athletic League game.

The 4 p.m. game at Mitty is a rematch of last season’s epic Open Division section championship, which St. Francis won 6-5 in walk-off fashion on its way to capturing the NorCal title.

St. Francis (16-1) has been dominant against Bay Area teams, with the Lancers shutting out nine of its 12 opponents from the region.

Their batters are hitting .374 as a team, and the pitching duo of Shannon Keighran and Kate Munnerlyn have combined to strike out 155 in 98 innings. St. Francis has won the Michelle Carew and Livermore Stampede tournaments this season.

Archbishop Mitty (11-2) has outscored opponents 83-20 and recently saw Kyleigh Mace and Ava Markert pitch back-to-back perfect games at the Livermore Stampede.

The Monarchs were upset by Amador Valley midway through the tournament, but have since rebounded and won three consecutive games. Their only other loss was a 2-0 defeat to Willow Glen.

“You are special on the courts, and you are special off the courts,” city mayor Sheng Thao said in a video posted by the Oakland Athletic League.

The parade started at Fairyland on the northwest side of Lake Merritt, and the teams rode in a double-decker bus clockwise around the lake before making their way to the Frank Ogawa plaza in downtown Oakland.
