Tom Lewis has returned to Mater Dei basketball and he’s not going alone

Tom Lewis has returned to Mater Dei.

It’s not a solo trip.

Lewis, a CIF Southern Section basketball player of the year on Coach Gary McKnight’s first great Mater Dei teams in 1980s, was added to the Monarchs coaching staff this summer. He was an assistant coach at Mater Dei in the early 1990s.

Lewis has years of coaching experience. He was JSerra’s first basketball coach, most recently was the coach at Cerritos Valley Christian, and in between was the coach at Saddleback Valley Christian and Orangewood Academy. He was an assistant at several other places including St. John Bosco, New Mexico State, Long Beach State and in women’s professional basketball. Lewis played college basketball at USC and at Pepperdine.

McKnight confirmed that Lewis’ son, Che Brogan, is enrolling at Mater Dei. Brogan, a 6-5 freshman, is one of California’s top players in the class of 2026. Brogan, whose mother Michelle played for Australia’s women’s Olympic team, scored 25 points for the Southern California All-Stars team that won the Pango’s Terrific 24 West championship last week.

Mater Dei boys basketball lost a college prospect during the summer. Tee Bartlett, a 6-8 forward, has enrolled at Coronado High in Nevada. Bartlett last season was the Monarchs fourth-leading scorer, at 9 points a game, and second-leading rebounder with 5 rebounds a game.
