Saturday afternoon I traveled out to Harrisburg for a huge game between two very good programs in State College and Harrisburg. Both teams entered the contest on win streaks, Harrisburg with 4 in a row, State College with 7 in a row. Both offenses can score, and the defense of the Cougars looked top notch giving up under 10 points a game. Defense played a huge factor in this game as it was the Little Lions defense that came out with force, holding the Cougars to just 6 points on the day.

In the first quarter, the State College defense made a statement when after 5 plays, the Little Lions Will Stone would intercept the Zakii Lewis pass setting up the first points of the game when State College’s kicker Kajetan Kaszubowski would hit his first of two field goals on the day, this one from 23 yards out, giving the Little Lions a 3 to 0 lead early in the first quarter. Harrisburg would respond however 2 drives later when Kyle Williams would grab the pass and take off for 68 yards and a score to put the Cougars on top 6 to 3 with 4 and a half minutes to go in the quarter.

Harrisburg’s defense would show some strength in the second quarter, when Senior CB-Amir Jones intercepted a Finn Furmanek pass but on their ensuing drive, they’d end up punting back to the Little Lions. Later in the quarter, with 3:29 left until halftime, State College would regain the lead 10 to 6 after a 3 yard run by D’antae Sheffey for the touchdown. Harrisburg would get two more chances in the first half but couldn’t get any rhythm going on offense giving the ball back to State College. Five plays in on the Little Lions final drive of the half, Michael Gaul would haul in the pass from Finn and score from 32 yards out adding their lead, 17 to 6 which would be the score at the end of the first half.

It wasn’t until late in the final quarter we would see more points added to the scoreboard, with 5:29 to go in the game, kicker Kaszubowski would connect on a 33 yard field goal but not before the ball would bounce off the upright, crossing the crossbar to give the Little Lions a 20 to 6 lead. Harrisburg, even though were without two key players for this game in Nayquan Prather, who is key return guy, and Shawn Lee Jr., a Sophomore QB. With the score 20 to 6 at the end of the game, many would think it was one sided but in all, Harrisburg actually did hang tough all game but penalties and just lack of energy at times seemed to doom them on this day.

Harrisburg finished the game with 234 yards of total offense, led by Zakii Lewis(QB) who had 150 yards total, 110 passing on 9 of 21 throwing the ball, with 1 INT, and 1 TD. Kyle Williams led the charge on the ground with 59 yards on 10 carries, and 80 yards receiving on 4 receptions and the lone score of the game for the Cougars. For the Little Lions, they put up 282 yards in total offense on 58 plays. Leading the way for State College was D’antae Sheffey, who finished the game with 102 yards rushing, 1 touchdown. Finn Furmanek went 9 of 15 for 115 yards, 1 touchdown, and 1 INT. Ty Salazer led the receivers with 69 yards on 4 receptions.

With the win, State College improves to 8-0 and leads District 6 rankings, and will most likely be the #1 seed in the playoffs in a couple weeks. In the loss, Harrisburg, now 5-2, is ranked 4th in the district behind Central York, who is 7-1 and ranked first, Cumberland Valley and Hempfield both at 6-2. Up next for the Little Lions is a home game vs Cumberland Valley who is #2 in D6. Harrisburg has an away game vs Chambersburg(3-5).
