BELLFLOWER — The St. John Bosco baseball team could not overcome poor execution with five uncharacteristic errors, coupled with Servite’s clutch hitting, as the Braves won a three-game series but suffered a 14-5 loss at home to the Friars in a Trinity League game Friday.

“It wasn’t the day that we were looking for,” St. John Bosco coach Andy Rojo said. “It’s a super rare feat to sweep another Trinity League team so we knew Servite was going to come in and do everything they could to salvage the series, at least one win.”

Junior outfielder Macade Maxwell led Bosco (9-3, 3-3) with a pinch-hit solo home run in the fifth inning.

“It felt great, gotta wait my turn to get my opportunity and when I get in the game, I have to step up and do my job and provide a run for my teammates and get us going,” Maxwell said.

However, Servite (7-6, 2-4) jumped out to a 10-0 lead by the fourth inning.

“This one was crucial and it was good to see them show up and play,” Servite coach Shawn Gilbert said.

The Friars were led by junior pitcher Talan Larson who only gave up two hits, and one earned run, with a walk and strikeout in five quality innings. Meanwhile, Servite sophomore catcher Jaden Liu went 3-3, with a three-RBI triple and a RBI single. He also drew a walk and scored three runs.

“The energy is contagious when it keeps rolling, the offense was good with some good critical bunts, putting the bat on the ball,” Liu said.

The Braves won the first two games against the Friars with narrow one-run victories, 2-1 at home on Tuesday and 4-3 at Servite Wednesday.

“Like I told the players, at the end of the day, we won the series,” Rojo said. “We got back on it. We had a great week. You have to walk away with the positive in this type of situation.”

“The job is to win the series but when you don’t win the series, you have to get at least one,” Gilbert continued. “That’s huge. Our backs were against the wall, we climbed out (Friday) so hopefully it will carry over to next week.”

Bosco’s starting pitcher junior Trevor Heishman began the game with a strikeout. Servite junior left fielder Avery Jones and junior first baseman Tomas Cernies followed with singles, which put runners on first and second with one out in the top of the first inning. Servite junior third baseman Austin Boatwright delivered an RBI single to left center field, which scored Jones for an early 1-0 lead. Heishman sat down the next two Friars to get out of the inning.

Larson began the bottom of the first by striking out Bosco’s leadoff hitter sophomore shortstop  Jaden Jackson. However, Bosco’s No. 2 hitter senior center fielder Julian Villasenor reached base after being hit by a pitch. Villasenor stole second base with two outs. However, Larson sat down the No. 3 and No. 4 hitters to preserve his scoreless inning.

Servite sophomore second baseman James Clark singled to begin the second inning. Junior right fielder Miles Scott was walked, which put runners on first and second with no outs. Clark and Scott advanced to third and second, after Heishman’s pickoff attempt at second, went wide left and sailed into the outfield. Liu drew a walk, which loaded the bases with no outs, for Friars junior shortstop Hayden Woodson, the team’s leadoff hitter. Woodson drew a walk, scoring Clark for a 2-0 lead.

Bosco called upon sophomore pitcher Aidan Dahlk to relieve Heishman in the second, with the bases loaded and no outs. Jones hit an RBI single, which pushed Servite’s lead to 3-0. The Friars added another insurance run on a throwing error before Dahlk closed the inning. Servite led 4-0.

Larson threw a 1, 2, 3 inning to get out of the second.

Woodson’s RBI single, which scored Clark, put Servite up 5-0 in the third inning. An RBI hit by Jones scored Liu and made it 6-0.

Bosco junior third baseman Owen Stelzer singled with one out in the bottom of the third, for his team’s first hit.

Scott stepped to the plate with bases loaded and no outs in the top of the fourth inning. Scott chopped a ball down the third base line but Stelzer’s throw to home was in time and got the Braves their first out of the inning. However, Liu delivered a three-RBI triple, which extended Servite’s lead to 9-0.

Bosco junior pitcher Alex Campos relieved Dahlk with one out in the fourth. Dahlk threw 2.1 innings and gave up six runs, three of them earned.

Woodson’s sacrifice RBI, brought home Liu. Servite led 10-0.

Larson threw another 1, 2, 3, inning to keep his then one-hit performance going in the fourth. Campos matched Larson with a 1, 2, 3 inning.

The Braves got on the scoreboard because of Maxwell’s leadoff pinch-hit home run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Bosco trailed 10-1.

“I think it brought a lot of excitement and positivity,” Maxwell continued. “I feel like we were a little bit down, low-energy, so I feel like that really brought some momentum to the clubhouse.”

“Every pitch, every play means everything and whenever you have the opportunity to make your plays, you just have to make them,” Maxwell added. “We just didn’t execute and do our jobs (Friday) and that was the outcome of the game.”

Campos threw 1.2 innings before he was relieved by senior pitcher Izaiah Olguin, who entered the game with the bases loaded and no outs in the top of the sixth inning.

Liu’s RBI single made it 11-1 in the sixth. Servite junior catcher Daniel Torncale’s two-RBI pinch hit made it 13-1.

RBIs by Bosco senior pinch hitters Andrew Valdez and Alejandro Decreux made it 13-3 in the bottom of the sixth.

Wilson’s solo home run made it 14-3 in the top of the seventh.

The Braves added two runs in the seventh, including an RBI sacrifice fly by Bosco junior pinch hitter Carlos Barajas, which made it 14-5.

Bosco has two weeks of nonleague games before resuming Trinity League play with a three-game series against rival Mater Dei on April 9.
