North Schuylkill reigns victorious over Palmerton in this semifinal matchup.

Joey Flail had 3 touchdowns and Gavin Mentzer had a strong kicking and punting performance for North Schuylkill.

The North Schuylkill Spartans and the Palmerton Blue Bombers pushed their battle up one night due to impending rain. The Spartans won the coin toss but chose to defer. Jaxon Chowansky immediately made an impact by bringing down Palmerton quarterback, Matthew Machalik. This ultimately led to the Blue Bombers punting on fourth down. Jared Tinari for the Spartans got right into action with a strong, 8-yard run into the end zone. Gavin Mentzer laced his first extra point of the night. Machalik bounced right back from his previous possession and ran 60 yards for Palmerton’s first touchdown. The score at the end of the first was tied at 7 a piece.

The second quarter started off with Joey Flail scoring his first touchdown from 31 yards out. When Palmerton received possession back, Spartan Steven Davis brought down Machalik. This didn’t phase the quarterback, he broke free for a 30-yard touchdown. The game was once again tied. North Schuylkill finished out the quarter with a bang. Spartan quarterback Trevor Minalda connected with Collin McGee for a 62-yard touchdown. The energy stayed with the Spartans as Chowansky had a huge tackle to force the Blue Bombers to punt. To finish out the half, Mentzer kicked a 35-yard field goal that easily could have been from 45. This sophomore has a powerful leg and a locked-in mindset. Could he be the next Carson Long? He has the potential, only time will tell. The score entering the locker rooms was North Schuylkill leading, 24-14.

The rest of the game was completely dominated by North Schuylkill. The offensive line included some great blocking from players like Sander Stokes. McGee made a tough catch in the end zone to get the scoring started in the second half. The Spartans next score came from Flail, who ran a quick 65 yards to give his team another touchdown. The Spartans defense was able to bring a stop to the Blue Bombers’ offense. Luke Miller’s tackle brought up fourth down and Palmerton had to punt off once again. Flail sealed the third quarter off with a 41-yard run down the left sideline. The score after three was a dominating Spartan lead, 45-14. Mentzer finished 6/6 in extra points.

Ricky Halford scored the Spartans seventh and final touchdown of the night from 8 yards out. The Blue Bombers had one last spurt of energy at the end of the game, a 92-yard kickoff return by Stephen Jones. The final score of this District XI AAA semifinal game was North Schuylkill 51, Palmerton 21.

Overall, the North Schuylkill Spartans were powerful on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball and look to have a bright future. Coach Walter Hall and his Spartan team will face Northwestern Lehigh for the District XI Championship. Location to be determined.
