Preparations for the quickly arriving 2021 fall season continue to progress for teams throughout the state.
Preston High School’s football team and both soccer teams will be competing in scrimmage events this weekend as they prepare for the regular season.
For the football team under first-year head coach Mark Deep, the Knights will have a pair of scrimmages in the grid-o-rama at North Marion High School on Saturday. The first will take place at 10 a.m. against Liberty High School followed by a scrimmage at noon against Elkins.
All players will report to the Preston locker room at no later than 7:15 a.m. and departure will be at 7:30.
Preston will begin the 2021 regular season with two consecutive road games. The first will feature a road date with the Hampshire Trojans on Aug. 27. The Trojans went 2-8 last season.
The Knights will then travel to face the North Marion Huskies who are coming off a 6-4 playoff season.
Preston will follow with back-to-back home games against John Marshall and Robert C. Byrd. John Marshall started 4-1 a year ago before finishing the season with a 5-5 record. Meanwhile, RCB went 9-1 before the season got canceled during the playoffs.
The East Fairmont Bees have been added to the schedule this year, and their matchup with the Knights on Sept. 24 will round out the first half of the season. The Bees were 2-9 in 2020.
Following an open week, the Knights will return to action on Oct. 8 when they travel down to Bridgeport to take on the Indians. Bridgeport is coming off an 8-1 campaign which featured a postseason berth.
Preston will then prepare for a pair of tough home games as it hosts Washington (5-5 in 2020) on Oct. 15 and University (3-4) on Oct. 22.
The Knights close out the season with a two-game road trip. The first meeting takes place on Oct. 29 when they travel to face the Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneers who are coming off a 1-5 season. Then, the regular-season finale will be all the way up in the northern panhandle against Brooke who went 1-8 a year ago. Preston defeated both B-U and Brooke to close out the 2020 season as well.
Both the Knights’ boys and girls soccer teams will head up to Brooke High School to play in the 2021 Brooke Classic Soccer-Rama on Saturday. There are 16 different boys’ soccer teams and 14 different girls squads currently slated for the day.
For the boys, Preston will open against Brooke at 9:15 a.m. before facing Weir at 10:45. Then, its third and final game will commence at 2:30 p.m. against Steubenville Central.
The Lady Knights will take on Harrison Central in its 8:30 a.m. opener. Then, they will battle Madonna at 11:30 a.m. before rounding out their day with a match against Oak Glen in a 3:15 p.m. kick.
The boys teams playing in the soccer-rama are Brooke, Wheeling Park, Grafton, Oak Glen, Steubenville Central, Weir, Phillip Barbour, Liberty, Washington, Preston, East Fairmont, Tyler Consolidated, Buckhannon-Upshur, Indian Creek, Fairmont Senior, and Caldwell.
The soccer-rama girls teams are Brooke, Wheeling Park, Harrison Central, Oak Glen, Madonna, St. Clairsville, Phillip Barbour, East Fairmont, Washington, Preston, North Marion, Robert C. Byrd, Weir, and Fairmont Senior.
The girls’ first regular-season match is scheduled for Aug. 24 against Petersburg. It’s the first of a home doubleheader with the boys in their season opener as the girls kick off at 5 p.m. while the boys start at 7.
