Randy Ragland resigns, Andrae Jacobs hired as new Middle Creek football coach

Middle Creek announced Wednesday that it has hired Andrae Jacobs as its new head football coach.

The school announced on Twitter last Thursday that Randy Ragland had stepped down from the position.

Jacobs played linebacker for Coastal Carolina in his college playing days, where he was named the 2010 Big South defensive player of the year and was twice named to the All-Big South team.

Jacobs has worked on coaching staffs at Richmond County (linebacker coach and defensive coordinator), Cleveland (defensive coordinator) and Lee County, where he also worked as the defensive coordinator for the Yellow Jackets. Lee County made the 2019 state championship game.

But the hiring is also a homecoming for Jacobs, who started his education and coaching career at Middle Creek in 2013, when he served as the linebacker coach.

Ragland took over the job at Middle Creek prior to the 2015 season. In his first season at the helm, the Mustangs posted a 14-1 overall record, advancing to the state semifinals and winning the Southwest Wake Athletic Conference title. Middle Creek lost to Page in the 4AA semifinals, 49-23.

Middle Creek returned to the state semifinals the following season. Again, the Mustangs posted a 14-1 record and won the conference title, but they were eliminated from the playoffs by Wake Forest, 20-17 in overtime.

In his six seasons as the head football coach at Middle Creek, the Mustangs posted a combined record of 58-17. The team had winning records every season and made the state playoffs five times. Middle Creek missed the playoffs in 2019 despite posting a 7-4 record.

Ragland succeeded Mike Castellano as the head football coach at Middle Creek.

Ragland came to Middle Creek from Fairmont High School in Robeson County. He spent two seasons with the Golden Tornadoes where he posted a 14-8 overall record and made the 2A playoffs both seasons.

Prior to coaching at Fairmont, Ragland spent three seasons as the head football coach at West Johnston High School. He was the offensive coordinator at Middle Creek before moving to West Johnston in 2010.

The Mustangs are coming off of a spring 2021 season in which they went 6-2 while losing in the first round of the 4AA playoffs to Richmond.

As part of the latest NCHSAA realignment, Middle Creek is now in the Southwest Wake Athletic 4A conference along with Apex, Apex Friendship, Cary, Green Hope, Green Level, Holly Springs and Panther Creek.
