Previous Hawkeye guarded back Desmond Ruler has football camp on Juneteenth at Iowa City Secondary School

Iowa City Secondary School’s field turf was splendid and enthusiastic on Saturday as youngsters from 1st to twelfth grade took part in the Desmond Ruler Juneteenth Football Camp.

Lord, a current Houston Texans cornerback, played for Iowa from 2013-16 and won the Jim Thorpe Grant in 2015 — given to the country’s top protective back.

Lord held two meetings Saturday — first through 6th graders went to camp from 9 a.m. to early afternoon and seventh through twelfth graders from 3-5 p.m.

Mitch Moore, City high’s head football trainer, said the school was respected to have the football camp.

“I believe it’s super significant for the local area and for football locally to get our childhood included and have a person like Desmond Ruler and a Thorpe Grant victor and have the option to come out and support this local area,” Moore said. “It’s anything but a truly flawless arrangement.”

Ongoing Hawkeye football graduate Chauncey Golston, who went to a similar secondary school as Lord, was additionally in participation at the camp. Golston was chosen by the Dallas Cowhands in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft.

Like Lord, Golston needed to give back in kind to Iowa City.
