Newark Lions Club awards scholarships to local high school graduates

Five Licking County graduates recently received scholarships from the Newark Lions Club.

They were honored at a banquet, and included Abby Aulby, Charles Britton, Pierce Ormond, Celina Valentine and Abby Derwacter.

Abby Aulby is a Newark High School graduate who will attend Findlay College and major in Pharmacy. Heavily involved with cheerleading, dance and Student Council, she has also been involved with the Salvation Army, Food Pantry and the Back Pack Project.

Charles Britton is Newark High School graduate and hopes to become an environmental lawyer. He says “the future is green, and I want to be a part of it.” He was involved in a wide variety of school activities and is employed by AMC Theaters. His hobbies include fishing, hiking and other outdoor activities.

Pierce Ormand is a Newark Catholic High School graduate and will attend Ohio State University’s main campus, where he says “he is going from being a big fish in a small pond to a little minnow in a large ocean.” Track and cross country were his main activities.

Celina Valentine is a Newark High School graduate and has enlisted in the U.S. Army, having completed basic training. She will attend Kent State University. She participated on tennis teams where she was No. 2 on the boys doubles team. She currently works three jobs and assists with her family’s home health care.

Abiby Derwacter is Newark High School graduate who will attend Case Western Reserve, majoring in Biomedical Engineering. She has taken a Newark High School record of 11 Advanced Placement courses. Derwacter also played a key role on the Newark High School girls basketball team that finished as state runnerup.

The Newark Lions Club will also sponsor Newark’s upcoming OHSAA Jamboree football game, when the Wildcats host Wooster on Aug. 13 at White Field. The club also sponsors the OHSSA Foundation basketball games hosted by Newark.
