New LHAC Sections to begin in 2023

With the LHAC expanding, there was lots of work to be done. The LHAC knocked off a big chunk of that work this week by creating the new football sections and a scheduling method.

Entering the LHAC in the 2023 season for football are Bald Eagle, Bellefonte, Clearfield, Huntingdon, Penns Valley, Philipsburg-Osceola and Tyrone from the Mountain League and Bellwood-Antis from the ICC.

Tim Janocko, Athletic director and Head Coach for Clearfield, thinks “its an exciting time and a good move for everyone. This will guarantee a full schedule which as of late has been tough for us. I also think an advantage is there will be  JV/JR High games. Youre going to maintain rivalries while welcoming some new opponents.”

To start off next year, there will be a drawing held in the near future to choose the schedules. Teams will play their four section opponents, plus three members of the same geographic section and two crossover games with one member from each opposite geographic section. So basically, West 1 will play all four of thier section teams, three from West 2 and one each from East 1 and 2 giving them nine games.

Heading in to week 10 there will be a crossover game based on rankings of the teams. Janocko says “if it works out and everyone is happy then you continue with that. If not, nothing is ever permanent and we revisit week ten.”

Jesse Nagle, Head Coach for Bald Eagle Area, says “its just great to not be searching for game, that’s always a benefit. We are still looking for a week 10 for this season, it’s difficult.  It’s kinda like the old Mountain League with a couple teams added. The full schedule is important. I like the crossover games and playing other teams.

Nagle is undecided on how week 10 should and will play out. “Some of the coaches didn’t like that week 10 championship type deal because of possibly meeting those teams right away again in the playoffs, but we’ll see how that works out. I just think it’s going to be a really good conference.”

Week 10 crossover games will be decided by rankings within the sections. Should it look like teams may have to play each other twice, they’ll move those teams up or down a few spots to avoid that situation.

The new football sections are:

West 1 – Bishop McCort Catholic, Greater Johnstown, Richland, Somerset and Westmont Hilltop.

West 2 – Bedford, Central Cambria, Chestnut Ridge, Forest Hills and Penn Cambria.

East 1 – Bellwood-Antis, Bishop Guilfoyle, Central, Huntingdon and Tyrone.

East 2 – Bald Eagle Area, Bellefonte, Clearfield, Penns Valley and Philipsburg- Osceola.
