Michigan State Baseball Collects ABCA Team Academic Excellence Accolades For Fifth Year In A Row

Michigan State baseball was recognized with the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Team Academic Excellence Award for the fifth-straight year.

Teams from every level of college and high school baseball were honored with the award, which recognizes teams coached by ABCA members that posted a GPA over 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for the 2020-21 academic year. A record 580 college and high school programs submitted nominations and received this year’s award. In total, over 200 high school programs and more than 380 collegiate programs from the NCAA Div. I, II, III, NAIA, and Junior College levels were recognized.

“Earning this honor for the fifth year in a row is a true testament to the hard work and dedication of Melissa Tallant and everyone in the SASS office, and we’re very grateful for everything they do for Michigan State baseball. I’m proud of the tradition of academic success established by our players. Our program prides itself on excelling in the classroom and on the diamond. I commend our guys for their character in handling their business in the classroom.”

MSU posted a program-record cumulative GPA for the second year in a row with a 3.650. Additionally, the team’s fall semester GPA of 3.719 was also the highest fall semester GPA in program history, while the spring semester GPA of 3.575 was the second-highest.

“I’m honored to work with a tremendous group of student-athletes and such a supportive coaching staff. These young men are committed to excelling in the classroom and it shows by them achieving the program-best team GPA for the fall semester and the second-highest ever for the spring semester. I’m very proud of them for earning this award for the fifth-consecutive year.”

After being the only Big Ten team on the Division I list in 2018 and 2019, Michigan State was joined by Illinois and Rutgers this season on the 94-team Division I list, while Illinois and Ohio State were on the 2020 season list on the 68-team Division I list.
