ARCADIA – JSerra’s girls track and field team won the distance medley relay at the Arcadia Invitational Saturday at Arcadia High School for the second year in a row, and they again dominated the event.

The team of senior Anastasia Snodgrass, juniors Brooke O’Brien and Georgia Jeanneret and sophomore Brynn Garcia won the 4,000-meter race in 11 minutes, 52.45 seconds, the fastest time in California this season, and they finished well ahead of runner-up Palo Alto (11:58.80).

Last year’s JSerra team won the race at Arcadia in 11:54.43.

The distance consists of a 1,200-meter first leg, which was run by O’Brien, who gave the Lions a lead. The second leg was 400 meters run by Jeanneret, and she increased the lead. The third leg 800 meters, run by Snodgrass, who solidified the lead before sophomore Garcia ran a strong 1,600 meters on the final leg.

Jeanneret, O’Brien and Snodgrass were on last year’s DMR team at Arcadia. Garcia was the new addition to the group.

Garcia said she had no problem finding reasons to run hard although victory was pretty much in hand when she took the baton from Snodgrass.

“One, the environment here,” Garcia said. “This is one of the greatest races in the nation, the crowd here at night is cheering loudly and that’s a big push right there. There’s our coach (Chase Frazier), who I want to make proud of us, and then my teammates were screaming and they pushed me through every single lap.”

Santa Margarita senior Roman Mendoza won the invitational 300 hurdles with a personal best 37.39 seconds. He won the event last week in 38.43 at the Trabuco Hills Invitational and afterward talked about his need to improve the rhythm of his steps as he approached the first hurdle.

He successfully fixed that for Arcadia.

“There are some races like last week where the steps just don’t get right for the first hurdle,” Mendoza said. “You just have to trust yourself, I guess. Keep pushing to get that first hurdle even if you don’t always get it right.”

One of the closest finishes of the day came in the invitational discus. One inch was the difference, an unusually tight margin for the event.

JSerra senior Brendon See posted a throw of 192 feet, 5 inches on his fifth attempt, 1 inch behind Tyler Poole of  Layton (Utah).

Winning is one large goal for many of the athletes who competed at the Arcadia Invitational, annually the most prestigious meet of the Southern California high school track and field regular season.

Improving is also a large goal.

“It’s always the best man who wins when you come out here,” said See, who leads Orange County in the discus this season. “Today I didn’t show up but maybe at the next meet we’ll get that.”

He said the next meet for him is the Orange County Championships on Saturday, April 15, at Mission Viejo High School.

See said the areas in which he is most in need of improvement include “the tempo through the (thrower’s) ring. Just a lot of fine tuning from here on out.”

See finished third in the shot put with his mark of 59-3.

The two-day meet attracted entries from 690 schools across 36 states.

The running events that drew the elite athletes competed in Saturday’s evening’s invitational events; the elite field events Saturday started in the late afternoon.

A prime attraction of the meet was supposed to be Serra sprinter Rodrick Pleasant, who set the state high school record in the 100 (10.14) last year, but he did not run in the 100 Saturday. He did run in the 4×100 relay.

Orange Lutheran’s 4×400 relay team of Jackson Weng, Shane Plourde, Longevity Khanrad Hernandez, Deuce Frierson-Cotter finished second in the open division at 3:21.45. The time was close to Trabuco Hills’ county-leading time of 3:21.15.

Jackson Weng, who ran the anchor leg for Orange Lutheran Saturday, was aware that the Lancers’ foursome smashed its previous season best of 3:26.43.

“How many seconds did we drop, like five seconds?” Weng said. “We all ran hard, went out as hard as we can. So I’m very proud of them (his teammates).

Mission Viejo senior Jada Gatlin was third in the invitational triple jump with a season-best 39-4.

On Friday, Laguna Hills sophomore Holly Barker finished second in the girls seeded 3,200 at 10:25.91, the best time in Orange County this season and her personal best. She was the Orange County girls cross country runner of the year this past fall.

Several Orange County athletes established their personal bests Saturday.

In the girls invitational 800, Newport Harbor sophomore Keaton Robar finished fifth at 2:09.13, her personal best and the third-fastest time by an Orange County sophomore. The county record is 2:02.30 by future Olympian Mary Decker of Orange High in 1974.

Jeanneret was sixth at 2:09.55, a personal record for her, in a great race won by JW North senior Mackenize Browne in a state-leading 2:03.07 that set the Arcadia Invitational record.

Jeanneret understood the 800 had an outstanding field. She ran into some congestion halfway through the second lap but found some space in the final stretch.

“I was super excited to go out today,” Jeanneret said. “I knew the race was stacked. I just wanted to stay with the pack. If I drop off, don’t let it get into my head and just keep going and try to get a PR (personal record).”
