High school football: Foothill cancels Friday’s game against De La Salle

Foothill has canceled its football game Friday night against De La Salle because of injuries and sickness.

Coach Greg Haubner said his roster has about 25-27 healthy players, down from 44 at the start of the season.

He hopes to get some players back in the next week or two.

The forfeit leaves De La Salle with nine regular-season games. Coach Justin Alumbaugh said on Tuesday night that he has tried to fill the vacancy with a last-minute replacement but isn’t hopeful given the late stage in the season.

De La Salle is coming off a dramatic 33-27 overtime victory at San Ramon Valley on Friday. The Spartans (5-2) have won five in a row since opening the season with losses to Orange Lutheran and Serra.

The Concord school had a bye week between its McClymonds and San Ramon Valley games.

If the Spartans don’t find an opponent for this weekend, they will next play on Oct. 27 at Monte Vista before closing out the season at home against Clayton Valley on Nov. 3.

Foothill (1-6) is scheduled to play host to San Ramon Valley on Oct. 27 and then visit California on Nov. 3.

The Pleasanton school had optimistic hopes in the off-season but was hit hard when two of its top players transferred — wide receiver Chris Lawson to Archbishop Riordan and running back Samear Lattier to Tracy.

Foothill also lost running back/linebacker Jackson Chandler to an ACL knee injury.
