Glenrock High School tees off for the first time

Glenrock High School tees off for the first time

Glenrock’s golf course has been a fixture in the community since the 1980′s. It’s a quirky course with plenty of character, and for the first time, it’ll be the home course for a Glenrock High School golf team.

The Herder golf team will practice at the course. It’s the first year of a golf program in the history of Glenrock High School.

Tara Chandler is the first-ever golf coach at Glenrock High School. She said she grew up around the golf course in Glenrock, even working there as a summer job during her upbringing.

Chandler, also a PE teacher, had been the volleyball coach for her first 16 years as an educator in Glenrock, but she said she’s excited to introduce a new generation to the game.

I love the town. I love the high school, and I wanted to see this become something that everybody else appreciates,” said Chandler.

Many of the golfers on the team have never played golf before, and Chandler said two had never even swung a golf course before joining the team.

Zachary Coleman is one of the few golfers on the team with experience. Previously, he played high school golf, but he had to drive all the way to Douglas to do it.

“It’ll be really nice to not have to drive to Douglas every day after school, and I really appreciate the golf course and letting us do this,” said Coleman. “It’ll be a lot of fun.”

Coleman is the only senior on the team, and he’s excited to be a leader on his high school team.

The team is competing in its first tournament this weekend at the Wheatland Invitational.
