Girls basketball roundup: Mater Dei, Sage Hill advance to semifinals in Open Division playoffs

A roundup of Orange County girls basketball games on Wednesday in the CIF Southern Section playoffs:

OPEN DIVISION 

No. 1 Mater Dei 94, Santiago Corona 38: Sophomore guard Addison Deal scored 21 points and junior center Jenessa Cotton added 14 as the Monarchs (28-2) defeated the visiting Sharks to reach the semifinals.

Third-seeded Mater Dei extended its winning streak to 20 games while improving to 2-0 in Pool B. It will play at No. 2 seed Etiwanda (28-2), also 2-0 in pool play, on Saturday for a trip to the finals.

No. 2 Sage Hill 66, Bishop Montgomery 54: Junior forward Kat Righeimer scored her 1,000th career point as the host and fourth-seeded Lightning (21-8) defeated the Knights for the second time to advance to Saturday’s semifinals at No. 1 Sierra Canyon (28-0).

Sage Hill and Sierra Canyon are both 2-0 in Pool A. The Trailblazers, ranked No. 1 in the nation by MaxPreps, defeated Ontario Christian 80-18 on Wednesday.

DIVISION 2A

Brentwood 66, No. 16 Cypress 57: The host Centurions (24-5) trailed the No. 1 seed Eagles 34-25 at halftime and fell one game shy of reaching the CIF State SoCal regionals.

DIVISION 3AA

No. 15 El Dorado 49, Murrieta Valley 39: Sophomore guard Bianca Carter scored 14 points and senior guard Kaylee Shimoda added 12 to lead the visiting Golden Hawks (21-8), who play host to Flintridge Prep in the semifinals Saturday.

DIVISION 4AA

No. 12 Buena Park 68, Irvine 50: Center Alana White scored 28 points and fellow freshman forward Bella Harmon added 26 to lead the host and top-seeded Coyotes (23-6), who play at Shalhevet (22-1) in the semifinals Saturday.

DIVISION 4A

Laguna Beach 62, Canyon Springs 45: The host Breakers led 28-14 at halftime and went on to reach the semifinals Saturday against visiting Oakwood.

Last season, Laguna Beach lost at Desert Christian Academy 53-50 in the Division 5AA semifinals.

DIVISION 5AA

St. Margaret’s 60, Immaculate Heart 47: Freshman guard Taylor Francois scored 14 points to help lead the host and top-seeded Tartans (25-6), who play at South Hills in the semifinals Saturday.
