Football recruiting: McClymonds star running back chooses Cal

McClymonds running back Jaivian Thomas announced on Tuesday night he will play for Cal.

“I’m Staying HOME!!,” Thomas wrote on his Twitter account. “Thank you to all the coaches for this opportunity. Excited to get to work!”

Later that night, he told the Bay Area News Group that having the opportunity to play college football in a major conference was an important factor in his decision.

“It’s big for me to have the opportunity to play in the Pac-12,” Thomas said via text. “Cal is a place filled with opportunities not only on the field, but also off of it.”

Cal was the only Pac-12 school to offer Thomas a scholarship, according to 247Sports.com.

The three-star prospect also had offers from San Jose State, Sacramento State, Rice, Army, Idaho and UC Davis.

Thomas also said the opportunity to stay in the East Bay was a major reason he chose to attend the Berkeley school.

“It’s great feeling to know that I can have many friends and family come support me,” said Thomas, an Oakland native.

Thomas is the ninth player and the first running back to commit to Cal in the 2023 recruiting class.

He joins a running back room that includes honorable mention All-Pac-12 selection Jaydn Ott.

The 5-foot-10, 170-pound Thomas rushed for 2,528 yards and 30 touchdowns while leading McClymonds to the Division 2-AA state championship game.

Thomas ran for at least one touchdown in every game he played this season and also started at defensive back for the Oakland Athletic League champions.
