Fall 2022 high school football preview: DAL Foothill Division

(Predicted order of finish)

Coach: Kevin Macy

Fall 2021 record: 10-4

What to expect: After a strange but ultimately rewarding season in 2021, Campo will return to the field this fall with familiar faces at quarterback and receiver. WR Robbie Mascheroni was a second-team all-Bay Area News Group selection last fall after he caught 63 passes for 1,229 yards and 13 touchdowns to help the Cougars win the North Coast Section Division II title. He is a three-star prospect, according to 247Sports. QB Dashiell Weaver also is back. Macy said Weaver “has great strength and very good accuracy.” RB Lucas Concepcion will carry the ball and play cornerback. “Lucas is a player who never gives up and gives leaves everything out on the field,” Macy said, adding that he is a “phenomenal kick returner.” FB/LB Robby Horst and DE/TE Charlie Murrin are two others expected to make an impact for a program that lost to Aptos 49-0 and Benicia 35-0 last year before making a late-season run to a section title.

Season opener: Aug. 26 vs. Moreau Catholic, 7 p.m.

Coach: Doug Longero

Fall 2021 record: 8-4

What to expect: The Knights tied Benicia and Campolindo atop the Foothill standings last season and return their quarterback and four starting linemen from that team, in addition to a college-level kicker. QB Michael Wood, who measures 6-6 and 205 pounds, made the all-league team and received all-Bay Area News Group recognition in 2021 after passing for 1,705 yards and 15 TDs. WR/DB Emmanuel Karnley also received all-league honors in 2021. He is a three-star prospect with 10 college offers. Alex Lisi is a three-year starter at WR and DB and Nathan Balestrieri, who is 6-2 and 300 pounds, is explosive on the line. Nick Barrett, a four-year starter at kicker and punter, is rated a five-star prospect by Chris Sailer Kicking. The concern for the team, Longero noted, is depth.

Season opener: Aug. 26 vs. Rancho Cotate, 7 p.m.

Coach: Floyd Burnsed

Fall 2021 record: 6-5

What to expect: The Dons lost quite a bit to graduation from a team that finished fourth last season in the Foothill Division. Luke Souza has moved on after throwing for 3,145 yards and 38 touchdowns, stats that led to him being named the league’s offensive MVP. The team also graduated its top rusher from 2021, Evan Malmquist, and its top two receivers, Dante Montgomery and Will Berrien. The top returning receiver, junior Trevor Rogers, is a three-star prospect with an offer from Massachusetts. He caught 23 passes for 452 yards and five TDs last fall. Ellis Burger, now a senior, ran for 341 yards and five TDs in 2021.

Season opener: Aug. 26 vs. San Marin, 7 p.m.

Coach: Jack Schram

Fall 2021 record: 6-5

What to expect: Schram, Miramonte’s longtime coach, says the Mats have great potential given that they have solid athletes at all positions. QB Luke Duncan is a UCLA commit whom the coach called a “gifted athlete” with the “potential to break all Miramonte passing records.” WR/DB Cooper Bohlig has natural ball instincts, according to Schram, and Jackson Davenport and Luke Davis provide a powerful presence on the line. WR/DB Chase Bliss is another player expected to make strong contributions. As a Division V program playing against schools with larger enrollments, Schram added that depth could be a factor.

Season opener: Aug. 26 at Berkeley, 7 p.m.

Coach: Craig Holden

Fall 2021 record: 9-4

What to expect: Graduation hit Benicia hard as the team’s quarterback, top rushers, top receivers and top defenders from last season’s team that won a share of the league title moved on. That includes the league’s defensive MVP, LB Janari Boone, and DL Miles Bailey, now at Fresno State. DL Anthony Sanchez and K Niko Ruiz were the only non-seniors on the team to receive all-league recognition. They’re seniors now. If Benicia is going to contend this fall, clearly it’s going to be with mostly new players.

Season opener: Aug. 26 vs. Fairfield, 7:30 p.m.

Coach: Ben Ballard

Fall 2021 record: 8-3

What to expect: The Broncos have moved up to the Foothill Division after capturing the Valley championship last season. As a junior last fall, QB John Pelletier was the Valley’s offensive MVP. His highlights included passing for 359 yards and three touchdowns and running for two touchdowns when Northgate beat College Park to clinch the league crown. Emilio Pucci was named the league’s defensive MVP in 2021. He’s also now a senior. Playmaking athlete Chris Contreras is among several players expected to return who are coming off all-league seasons. Others on that list include WR Jake Berger, lineman James Bondad, LB/OL Antonio Pucci and DB RJ Anderson.

Season opener: Aug. 26 vs. Deer Valley, 7 p.m.
