ANAHEIM — The Fullerton baseball team beat Troy for the third consecutive time this season with a 12-2 victory on Friday night.

But for the players from Fullerton and Troy, something much more important transpired at Angel Stadium in the Halo Classic: dozens of childhood dreams were realized.

“It’s awesome,” Fullerton coach Shaun Hill said of playing Friday’s game at the home for the Angels. “Anytime you get to stand on a major league field as a coach, player, I think there’s all smiles everywhere.”

Troy coach Jason Jamison was equally enthusiastic about the experience.

“It’s always a thrill to come here as a spectator to watch the Angels play,” Jamison said, “and I think it’s even a greater thrill to come out here and watch these high school kids experience a dream of a lifetime to play on this field.”

Both Hill and Jamison were successful in making sure all of their players had an opportunity to soak in the moment in a big league ballpark.

“We got 27 guys on the lineup card and the goal is to get everyone to play, and you don’t know if you’re going to do it. We actually were able to get everyone (into the game),” Hill said. “It’s exciting for every family member to see their kid on a major league field. It’s a dream and it’s awesome for the kids, everyone was really excited to get on the field.”

“The most important part of it is that we give a great experience to our entire roster,” Jamison added. “We want to win the game, we want to be competitive, but at the same time I came here today with the intent of trying to get every single player in the game, which we were able to accomplish.”

Malachi Meni went 3 for 4 with three RBIs for Fullerton (13-5-1), Zach Fany went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and Carlos Barrios had a two-RBI single in the second as part of a five-run inning.

The Indians scored two runs in the first then added five runs in the second before Troy starting pitcher Darren Woo was replaced on the mound by Vincent Rael.

Fullerton’s DJ Garcia began the third with a lead-off single off Rael before Fany and Robinson collected back-to-back RBI triples and Meni added an RBI double that made the score 10-0.

“We played them two games earlier and we were close to breaking some big games open,” Hill said, “and we couldn’t get the clutch hit and the offense kinda poured out today, it was nice to see.”

The Warriors (4-13-1) answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the third when Chris Soto drove in Kyden Ordonez and Nico Lopez.

In the bottom of the sixth, Cole Bailor told Jamison that the mountain beyond the fence in center field was “calling his name.” Bailor made a valiant attempt at sending a ball over the fence but flied out to center.

Just another example of what the game at a professional venue meant to the players.

“I was glad that Cole put the ball in play,” Jamison said. “We preach putting the ball in play, you put the ball in play and good things happen. And hopefully he’ll continue to do that and good things will happen.”

Fullerton’s first two wins over Troy were both Freeway League games but the Halo Classic contest was designated as a nonleague game.

The Indians resume league play next week, taking on Sunny Hills on Wednesday, while Troy will face La Habra on Wednesday.
