Boys Volleyball Western Mass. Quarterfinals: West Springfield ends Putnam’s perfect season & more

The No. 9 West Springfield boys volleyball team took down No. 1 Putnam on Monday, 3-0.

The Terriers (8-6) will move on to face the No. 13 seed Ludlow on June 23 at 6:00 p.m. in the semifinal round of the tournament.

West Springfield won the first set 25-12, the second 25-16 and the third 25-15.

Nick Sebula had a strong match, recording 11 kills, three aces, two digs, one block and one assist. Jacob Kukharchuk added 13 assists, seven digs, four kills, one ace and he assisted on a block. Joshua Mosijchuk led the team with nine digs, and he also added two aces and an assist.

Putnam earned the first seed with a perfect regular season, but the Beavers’ season came to an end with a record of 10-1.

No. 13 Ludlow defeats No. 5 Holyoke, 3-0

Collin Doyle and Joe Quiterio led the No. 13 Ludlow boys volleyball team as the Lions defeated No. 5 Holyoke, 3-0.

Ludlow (6-7) took the first set 25-16, before winning the second and third 25-19 and 25-17. The Lions advance to play No. 9 West Springfield on Thursday, June 21.

Doyle finished Monday’s match with a team-high 13 kills and four blocks to go along with one ace. Setter Joe Quiterio, meanwhile, had 30 assists, two aces, four digs, one kill and 1.5 blocks.

Chris Fogg added on a seven kill, 12 dig performance for the Lions.

Lewis Torres had an all-around strong day for the Purple Knights, leading the team in kills and digs with seven and 20, respectively. Jairam Rodriguez also had a strong day, posting five kills and 17 digs.

Dennis Popovichenko and Benjamin Warren combined for 25 kills Monday afternoon as the No. 3 Chicopee Comp boys volleyball team swept No. 6 Sabis, 3-0, to advance to the Western Mass. semifinals.

The Colts (10-1) won 25-18 and 25-19 in the first two sets before closing out the match 25-12. Chicopee Comp is slated to play No. 2 Westfield on Thursday after the Bombers beat No. 7 Agawam, 3-0, in the quarterfinal round.
