Big Rapids soccer players earn All-State honors

Three Big Rapids girls soccer players were recently named to the Michigan High School Soccer Coaches Association All-State list.

Players included seniors Ariana Costie and Emily Morrone, and, sophomore Julia Waltz.

Costie was named to the second team Waltz to the third team and Morrone to the honorable mention list.

Big Rapids won Central State Activities Association and Division 3 district titles this season and lost in the regional finals.

Costie, a defensive mid, was named No. 1 player in District 46 and had 12 goals and four assists.

“Ariana was probably the most gifted athlete we had on the field both offensively and defensively,” Big Rapids coach Curt Ray said.

“I thought she did a great job helping in the backfield. She’s a very gifted athlete. It will be hard to fill her shoes. She was very technically sound. She was physically strong on the field.”

Morrone had two goals and one assist.

“We named her our defensive player of the year,” Ray said. “She put in a lot of time and effort during the offseason to get better. Her leadership in the back on and off the field helped us. We didn’t give up a lot of goals. She helped build that young offensive line to where it was. It was one of the better defenses in the state, even giving up a couple of goals to Boyne. They were scoring a lot of goals against good quality teams and we held them to only two.

“She’s a great kid and a great student grade wise. She will be a tough one to replace back there.”
