36 wrestlers from the Peoria area part of Illinois finals hosted by coaches group

Illinois high school wrestlers will get a chance to go after state championships this week, thanks to the Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association.

The IWCOA put together the championships shortly after the Illinois High School Association announced its wrestling season would end June 12 without a state tournament.

The IWCOA has hosted a week long series of state tournaments, starting with the girls event on Monday and followed by the fresh-soph on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The high school state championships wrap up the week, with Class 1A competing Thursday, Class 2A on Friday and Class 3A on Saturday — all at the BOS Center in Springfield.

The boys championships begin with a round of 16 at 9:30 a.m. each day on eight mats. The third and fifth place matches are scheduled for 4 p.m., with the March of Finalists and championship bouts at 5 p.m.

Canton, which won a regional title and finished second at sectionals, has the most Peoria area competitors, with five in Class 1A. Tremont and Illini Bluffs each have three.

Washington and Galesburg each have four wrestlers in Class 2A, while Morton has three. Dunlap has its first state qualifier, in freshman Nick Mueller.
