Last year was a good year for Cocalico running back Sam Steffey. The incoming senior ran for 1,829 yards with 23 touchdowns, an average of 6 yards per carry. Sam says he felt last years season “was extremely successful. I worked as hard as I could the off-season before. I earned my spot as the starting fullback where I took ahold of it and had an all state season. With all that hard work I also helped my team make states and win a district championship”. Steffey also says he took more of a leadership role and believes it’ll help him in the future.

Cocalico head coach Bryan Strohl is high on high running, but also expects him to excel on the defensive side as a lineback/defensive end. “Sam had a tremendous breakout season in 2022 and was a workhorse in our backfield.  Sam also played some DL and some LB in 2022, and we look for him to excel on the defensive side of the ball at the position we need him at the most in 2023. Sam is also an excellent student in the classroom and an exceptional leader who has done a great job setting the tone in the weight room this spring, and 23 look forward to seeing him as a leader for our team in 2023.”

Let’s get to know Sam:

Why do you play football? I play football because everyday I want to challenge myself to be the best player I can be. I want to see how good I can really be and how much I can impact a team.

Who is your favorite sports star and WHY? My favorite sports star is probably ray lewis. He did not care how big you are or how big he is he wanted to take you out. I see myself wanting to be like that when it comes to football.

Do you have a favorite play you remember the most? Explain: My favorite play that I remember the most was the touchdown pass at Exeter. I had a lot of carry’s at the beginning of the game. We ran a fake to me and the whole defense was completely fooled. Are quarterback threw a beautiful pass over the top to put us up by 14 in the district championship.

What are your goals for this coming season? My goals for next season are to have another season of good football. If that means being more of a decoy because of my last years stats or carrying the ball more. My goals are really to just be a good leader for my football team and set us up for success in playoff football and further.

Who is the best player you ever lined up against? I played against nic singleton my sophmore year where he made a play where he ran me over and scored a touchdown. Saw him do the same thing at Penn state the next year. Also nods to J’ven Williams, Nolan rucci, Ryan brubaker, Ryan palmeri, Joey shlafer, and Anthony caccese

What stadium, HS/college/pro would you love to visit for a game? I would love to go to a Penn state game where I could go sideline.

What is your favorite Pro team, any sport? Philadelphia eagles

What game, yours, college or pro, was your favorite game you watched and why? Our second game against solanco. The first time we played them we got shut down. It was embarrassing in a 21-7 loss. Next time in playoffs we came out and put up 32-8 on them.

What sports movie would you watch every day if you had to pick one and why? The sandlot. Favorite movie as a kid. Makes me feel like a child still.

If your mom and dad are screaming at you from the stands, what is it they usually yell? Never had them yell at me from the stands.

Name one thing that you’d love to do in football that may never happen? I would love to visit a d1 school as a recruit

Who is your mentor, the person you want to be like? WHY? I don’t have anybody that I want to be like. I want to be the best version of myself. Working myself until I physically can’t. Giving everything I have to be the best I can

Name a sport you’d love to play but can’t: Golf

What is your most embarrassing sports moment? During my first big football game there was about 2 minutes left. The game was on TV and the camera panned over to me when I was stretching due to cramping. My coach gave me a pickle to which I threw it up everywhere. It was all on TV

Is there anyone in your family, besides your parents, you could consider your biggest fan? Who, Why? It would be my grandma. She never yells but she always tells me after the game that she is proud of me

When you aren’t playing, practicing or training for sports, what is your go to activity and why? Working out and just being with friends

What is your favorite football memory to date? Winning the district championship

What is your favorite play to run? It is a trap kind of play. I usually get the ball at full speed. I also like a speed option where I get to tee off on a linebacker or safety

What scares you the most? That I will get injured and not be the same player.

Music of choice: Kanye west or 90s rap

What was your favorite gift as a little boy? Why? I loved my Xbox 1 because than I could play the new madden on it

What restaurant is your go to when you need a big meal? Any fast food because I can afford a lot of food there

Which one? Sheetz or Wawa Sheetz 100%

What is your favorite vacation destination? In Punta Cana right now. It’s pretty cool

Do you remember what the first football game you saw was? My brothers high school games
